Employees of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health: Suspending European integration “will damage the country’s progress”

Employees of the L. Sakvarelidze National Center for Disease Control and Public Health are publishing a joint statement opposing the “Georgian Dream” party’s decision to halt European integration. The statement is signed by 152 employees.

“Statement by the employees of the LEPL L. Sakvarelidze National Center for Disease Control and Public Health:

We, as representatives of the center, express our firm support and loyalty towards Georgia’s integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures.
Each of us spares no effort to fulfill the obligations undertaken through the Georgia-EU Association Agreement in the direction of public health.

Over the years, it was precisely with the support of Western, American, and European structures that the center was established and developed, significant reforms were implemented in the field of public health, the foundation was laid for the creation of the Richard Lugar Public Health Research Center, strengthening tobacco control, establishing environmental health direction, developing public health risk preparedness and response direction, which was particularly effective during the COVID-19 pandemic, developing a safe blood system, implementing the C hepatitis elimination program, and many others.

Removing the opening of EU membership negotiations by 2028 from the political agenda contradicts the requirements of Article 78 of the Constitution of Georgia and will damage the country’s progress.
We firmly believe that integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures should remain one of the main priorities of Georgia’s foreign policy. We remain loyal to Georgia’s democratic aspirations and Western values!”
