148 active employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia sign a joint statement, indicating that the suspension of EU membership process contradicts the requirements of Article 78 of the Constitution of Georgia.
Here is the statement in its original form:
Joint Statement of Current Employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia
As diplomats, our primary duty is to protect Georgia’s national interests and maintain loyalty to the Constitution. For years, Georgian diplomacy has directed all efforts toward Georgia’s membership in European and Euro-Atlantic structures, which represents the will and historical choice of the Georgian people.
Today’s statement regarding Georgia’s removal of EU membership negotiations from the agenda until 2028 does not align with the country’s strategic interests.
The EU enlargement wave, which represents an unprecedented historical opportunity for Georgia to return to the European family, is conditioned by international political events. The country’s unilateral rejection of this opportunity will lead to negative strategic consequences. Moreover, such a favorable environment for integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures may not emerge again. Additionally, halting the membership negotiation process will result in the country’s isolation. Without the support of Western partners, Georgia remains alone in facing threats that are particularly intensified against the backdrop of ongoing processes in the international security environment.
We believe that removing EU membership negotiations until 2028 from the political agenda contradicts the requirements of Article 78 of the Constitution of Georgia.
We remain committed to Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration course.
