“Unwavering support” for Georgia’s independence and territorial integrity, call for free and fair elections: European Council conclusions published

The European Council has published conclusions from its October 17 discussion on several key issues, including comments on ongoing events in Georgia. The European Council reaffirms its support for the Georgian people on their path to European integration while expressing deep concern about the course of action of the Georgian government “which runs counter to the values and principles upon which the European Union is founded.”

The published conclusions note that such policies of the Georgian government threaten Georgia’s European path and de facto halt the EU accession process. The document remarks on the need for comprehensive and sustainable democratic reforms, conducting elections in a fair and free environment, and protection of free, independent media in the context of the accession.

The European Council also reiterates its unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and underlines the European Union’s continued commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and its policy of non-recognition and engagement.
